Exodus 32:1-14

Ordinary Time after Pentecost Autumn (Tree of Life)

Welcome and Prelude

Please rise in body or spirit.

Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness

P      Returning again to the waters of our baptism, we begin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C     AMEN

P      Let us confess our sins before God and in the presence of one another.

Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P      Gracious and merciful God,

C      We confess to You the truth of our broken lives.   We have not trusted Your promises or walked in your ways.   We have hoarded and squandered the gifts of Your creation.   We have failed to welcome the stranger and the outcast, and to make room at the table for the homeless and the hungry.   We have neither worked to release the oppressed nor admitted our own captivities.   Forgive our sins, heal our lives, and set us free that we might live with Your whole creation in the justice and joy of Your promised future.

P      God, who is merciful and kind, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, hears the cries of all who plead for mercy and, in these last days, has sent Christ Jesus to announce the good news of forgiveness and release to all who are bound by guilt or broken by shame, that they might praise God and serve the world with glad and generous hearts.

P      For freedom Christ has set you free.

C      Thanks be to God.

Introit   -      Psalm 29:1,2

and to the | Holy Spirit

Greeting  and Prayer of the Day

P      The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

P      Let us pray.

A brief silence is kept before the prayer.

P      Faithful God of an unfaithful people, the people of Israel doubted Your power and turned to other gods to fulfill their needs. We too, turn to other gods, seeking acceptance, power, and independence. Show us how to live humbly in You, and walk in Your ways, in the name of the one who offered true power to all humanity, Jesus Christ. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

C      AMEN.

Please be seated.

Prayers of Intercession and Thanksgiving

A     With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation.

P      Into Your hands, O Holy One, we entrust all for whom we pray, confident in Your abundant and abiding mercy; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

C      AMEN.

Offering the Gifts and Tithes and Prayer

A      Let us pray. Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let Your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into Your kingdom, for Yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever.

C      AMEN.

Great Thanksgiving

P      The Lord be with you.

P      Lift up your hearts.

P      Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P      Holy God, holy life-bringing God, You created the cosmos and all that is in it through the breath of Your mouth and the caress of Your hands.

Holy God, holy imaginative God, You set Your tree of life in the center of Your world, enlivening the barrenness, breathing spirit across the dust.

Holy God, holy compassionate God, when our sin ravaged the cosmos and laid it bare, You planted once again in the center the tree of life, the cross from which Christ rose to save and heal us.

Holy God, holy healing God, we remember:

In the night in which He was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is My body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of Me.

Holy God, holy generous God, we remember Christ's life and death, His resurrection and ascension which renew the face of the earth. We give back to You what You have given us in creation, bread and wine, wheat and grapes, our lives and all we have. We wait for Christ to come in glory.

Holy God, holy life-giving God, create us anew with the breath of Your mouth and the caress of Your hands. Send Your Spirit to enliven our barrenness and bring new life from the dust. Gather us and all You have created around and beneath the tree of life.

C      AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer      (using “trespasses”)

P     Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray...

P     Share in the inheritance of all the saints. Come to the table prepared for you.

Please be seated.

Distribution of Bread

P      The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in His grace.

C      AMEN

A      Let us pray. God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things may we who have gathered at the cross today be welcomed with all Your saints and eat from the tree of life on the day of Your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C      AMEN.

P      Almighty God, Father,  Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.

C      AMEN.

Please be seated.

A     Go in peace. Christ is with you.

C      Thanks be to God.
